7:30 pm: Meeting & Presentation: "The Secret Victorian Lady"

September 3, 2019

Ladies, this one's for you! “The Secret Victorian Lady” demystifies the function of undergarments worn by Victorian ladies to achieve the fashionable silhouette.

Lydia Chiappini, dressed in an earlier Victorian ensemble, will explain the various garments and undergarments that make up the silhouette, along with their cultural and sociological implications, by “deconstructing” the silhouette. She will then redress it to create a later Victorian costume, showing the historical changes that take place in dress. All the designs are original and period correct. They are based on extant examples in the MET, the Sigal Museum, and various publications.

10:00 am: Pathways of History - MBH Tour

September 21, 2019

The Pathways of History is a celebration of local history, community pride and volunteerism. The tour highlights a collection of Morris County's small, volunteer-run free admission museum treasures. This year's family friendly event will feature 18 sites with unique personalities, presentations and singular views of local history.

This tenth anniversary celebration tour promises something of interest for everyone. Spanning almost 300 years of Morris County history, the museum buildings are an eclectic representation of architectural periods and styles.

The Martin Berry House in Pequannock Township is the evolution of a northern New Jersey Dutch farmstead from a simple c1720 structure to a high style five bay center hall stone house. From a country farmhouse built in 1740 to the home of a troupe of marionettes, the Miller-Kingsland House is Boonton's oldest recorded home, and for the first time, the Montville Township Museum will welcome visitors.

7:30 pm: Meeting & Presentation: "Caldwell Railway"

October 1, 2019

Local historian Phil Jaeger will present the history of the Caldwell Railway, which began service in 1891. The line started in Great Notch and passed through Cedar Grove, Verona and Caldwell before ending in Essex Fells. By the end of the decade, the line had become the Caldwell Branch of the Erie Railroad's Greenwood Lake Division. The demise of the railway in 1966 and why it failed will also be discussed.

Phil rode one of the last trains on the last day of service on the line in 1966. His PowerPoint program contains old pictures of the railway and the remains that can still be seen today. Learn what part the railway played in the building of both Overbrook and the Newark Reservoir, and what were the reasons for its eventual demise. There will be a short business meeting before the program.
